Elea Golf Club named a finalist in the GOLF INC. Development of the Year honours
(January 3, 2012) Eléa Golf Club in Cyprus, part of the prestigious Eléa Estate development near Paphos, ended 2011 on a high after being named a finalist in the Golf Inc. Development of the Year honours.
More than 30 projects from 19 countries were judged in the annual awards, with Eléa Estate recognised as a finalist alongside Barnbougle Lost Farm in Tasmania; Black Jack Crossing in Lajitas, Texas; Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany, Italy; and The Gary Player Signature Course at Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort in Bulgaria.
The overall winners were announced as Golf Baan Stippelberg in the Netherlands; Old Macdonald, Bandon Dunes, USA and Mission Hills, Hainan in China.
Ross Robertson, Director of Golf Operations at Eléa Estate said: “The Golf Inc. awards are a trusted barometer of great golf developments around the globe and this latest accolade for Eléa Golf Club is yet more independent evidence that Cyprus can now officially boast one of the world’s leading new courses.”
Eléa Golf Club, opened by six-time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo in October 2010, has rapidly built a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting new golf destinations.
It recently won the prestigious ‘Best International Leisure Development’ accolade at the 2011 International Property Awards in London that added to its ‘Best European Leisure Development’ and ‘Best European Golf Development’ awards won in November. It has also been recognised by one of the World’s largest consumer golf journals, Golf Magazine in the USA, as one of the ‘Top 10 new international golf courses of 2010’.
Katina Cavagnaro, Publisher of Golf Inc, commented: “The magnitude of many of the entries for Development of the Year were outstanding — from U.S. to international submissions. We expanded the number of finalists from three to five because of the unparalleled quality of the entrants.”
Judges for the contest were Sam Sakocius, President at Project Control International, who is based in China, and Rick Baril, Principal at Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril, and winner of last year’s competition. The magazine has also announced it will honour the three winners and five finalists in its upcoming winter issue.
