Costa Brava to become Landmark golf destination

Monday, 12 April 2010

Costa Brava-Girona Tourism – which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary as one of Europe’s finest tourist destinations – has appointment specialist golf marketing and PR firm Landmark Media to manage its international media relations.

The agency will now promote the region, a former IAGTO Emerging Golf Destination of the Year, and its 10 outstanding golf courses as a high quality destination for golf breaks.

“PGA Catalunya, which is ranked the number three golf course in Continental Europe (Golf Monthly magazine), is world renowned and the jewel in our golfing crown,” said Jaume Marin, Director of Marketing at Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona. “What is less well known is that we have a host of superb golf courses within a concentrated area, including the 36-hole Emporda resort, also in the European Top 100 Courses, and Platja de Pals, a confirmed favourite among the Continent’s elite courses.”

Jaume Marin added: “The city of Girona, the beautiful Costa Brava and the wider Catalan region have retained their distinctive cultural charm and offer golfers one of the finest destinations in Europe for a golf break all year round.”

Just an hour north of Barcelona and close to the border with France, the Costa Brava – meaning rugged coast, and characterised by picturesque rocky coves, sandy beaches and fishing villages that became the home and inspiration of genius Salvador Dali – remains one of the most naturally beautiful regions of Spain.

At its heart is the Roman city of Girona, its ancient cathedral rising high above cobbled streets crammed with restaurants and boutiques, and a lively central quarter dissected by four rivers fed by snow melt from the Pyrenees. The region is also famed for its gastronomy and no less than 14 restaurants in Girona have been awarded at least one Michelin Star. The most famous restaurant in the world, El Bulli – its chef Ferran Adrià renowned for his culinary experiments – is close by. El Bulli receives more than three million reservation requests a year, but only 8,000 lucky diners are invited to dine there.

Just a short drive from Girona’s city centre is Girona Costa Brava Airport, now a major European hub for Ryanair and other airlines, servicing seven million passengers a year and bringing most European capitals within a two-hour flight range. Barcelona International Airport is an hour’s drive away.

All 10 courses on the Costa Brava are conveniently located less than 45 minutes’ drive from the airport and include: Club de Golf Costa Brava, Club de Golf Peralada, Golf d’Aro, Emporda Golf, Golf Girona, Golf Plaja de Pals, Golf Serres de Pals, PGA Catalunya Resort, Torremirona Golf Club, Club de Golf Camprodon, plus the delightful par-3 Pitch & Putt Gualta.

“In every way, the Costa Brava is an outstanding destination and one that offers golfers excellent courses from European Tour venues to enjoyable resort courses, plus wonderful hotels, food, wine and culture,” said Gary Firkins, Director of Landmark Media. “Combined with the delights of Girona and the natural beauty of the Costa Brava, plus seasonal skiing in the Pyrenees, this is one of the finest destinations for golfers in Europe.

“We look forward to welcoming international media and golfers to the Costa Brava region.”

A schedule of press trips has been announced for 2010 and journalists interested in visiting the region should contact Gary Firkins: gary@landmark-media.com <mailto:gary@landmark-media.com> , tel +44 1780 752790.
